International Journal Articles on Social Enterprise

Rory is a regular contributor to national and international conferences on governance, gender and social enterprise.  To date, the following articles have been accepted for publication in international journals:

Books

Rory's first book Silent Revolution: Creating and Managing Social Enterprises, grew out of debates in management seminars at the worker co-operative Computercraft Ltd (London).  It captures some of the management thinking that informed the development of social enterprise during the period 1999-2001.  The book was not published until early 2002 and received little publicity at the time (it served mainly as an internal management text).  Nevertheless, electronic copies and a few printed copies influenced leading practioners of workplace democracy and the Employee Ownership Association.  It also led to a PhD Studentship that allowed Rory to establish his academic career.  Historically, the book holds a unique place in the early literature on social enterprise.

Rory's second book Emotion, Seduction and Intimacy: Alternative Perspectives on Organisation Behaviour is a product of Rory's doctoral research: a scholarly examination of the way emotional life contributes to social structures and inter-personal behaviour inside and outside the workplace.  Informed by the recent research on gender dynamics and courtship at work, this ground-breaking book helps managers and consultants at all levels to rethink the application of democratic principles in the modern workplace.

Below are further article extracts and working papers used for teaching purposes (currently works in progress in respect of journal submissions).

Short articles for students (2000 - 2500 words) are available from Rory's page at SearchWarp.

Doctoral Thesis on Social and Economic Rationality

Lastly, below is an electronic version of Rory's PhD on Corporate Governance (for any masochists amongst you).  Rory's work outlines gender dynamics in employee-owned organisations to produce new theory on the relationship between gender and governance.  Although the work was undertaken in three established social enterprises, the theories generated are generic and can be utilised to understand human behaviour in multiple contexts.

The doctorate in available in hard copy from the libraries of Sheffield Hallam University, Social Enterprise London and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, and also from the British Library.
